Former President Radev’s Party Wins Bulgarian Elections

Bulgaria’s parliamentary elections on Sunday were won by the Progressive Bulgaria party, led by former president Rumen Radev. An exit poll by Alpha Research showed the party with 37.5% support.

The GERB party, led by former prime minister Boyko Borissov, placed second with 16.2%.

In its campaign, Radev’s party pledged to curb corruption and end a cycle of weak, short-lived governments. However, it will need coalition partners to form a majority.

Radev also opposes military support for Ukraine in its war against Moscow.

He resigned from the presidency in January to run in the election following mass protests, which forced the previous government to step down in December.

The vote was the eighth in five years in the Balkan country of around 6.5 million people.
