UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon Faces Uncertain Future

The future of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon remains uncertain. UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) could remain in the country beyond the end of its mandate later this year. However, the presence would likely be smaller and more flexible than the current deployment of more than 7,000 troops.

He said Lebanon was clearly signaling an interest in continued international support, particularly given ongoing tensions with Israel.

The conflict has escalated again following Hezbollah attacks in early March, with sporadic incidents reported despite the ceasefire. Israeli troops also control parts of southern Lebanon, further complicating the situation.

UNIFIL has long been tasked with monitoring the ceasefire, supporting the Lebanese army and overseeing compliance with the ban on illegal weapons. In recent weeks, the mission has also reported casualties among peacekeepers.

At the same time, the UN is facing financial pressures that are forcing it to scale back operations. Lacroix warned that the cuts could affect the organization’s ability to protect civilians and maintain stability in conflict regions.
