Italy Signals Readiness to Join Strait of Hormuz Security Mission

Italy has declared its readiness to join an international mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz. Chief of Naval Staff Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto said the country could deploy up to four vessels, including two minesweepers, an escort ship and logistical support.

The move follows talks among European leaders in Paris on protecting shipping after the strait was severely restricted during the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran. About 20% of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a critical artery for the global economy.

Several countries are planning to take part in the operation, including Britain, France and the Netherlands. Italian vessels are expected to depart from the port of La Spezia and reach the area within about four weeks.

However, the deployment still requires approval by the Italian Parliament. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said political authorization is a prerequisite for the country’s participation in the mission.
