Germany Pushes for Softer AI Rules as EU Talks Flounder

Negotiations between the European Parliament and EU member states on easing artificial intelligence rules stalled after late-night talks on Tuesday, with regulations for industrial machines and medical devices emerging as the main point of dispute, Politico reported.

The proposal would delay parts of the AI Act until December 2027 and ban so-called AI detection apps designed to identify AI-generated content, but negotiators failed to reach a compromise.

Germany in particular has pushed for a more lenient framework for industry in an effort to support companies such as Siemens and Bosch.

That position has faced resistance from several member states and some members of the European Parliament.

The dispute comes as new rules for high-risk AI systems are due to take effect in August, raising concerns about legal uncertainty for companies and regulators alike.

Talks are expected to continue, although no new deadline has yet been set.
