Ukraine Seeks Details From US on Russian Ceasefire Proposal

Ukraine has asked the United States to clarify details of Russia’s proposal for a short-term ceasefire, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday.

“I have instructed our representatives to contact the team of the President of the United States and clarify the details of the Russian proposal for a short-term ceasefire,” Zelensky wrote on X.

He stressed that Ukraine is seeking peace and continuing diplomatic efforts to end the war. “Let’s clarify what exactly is at stake, whether it’s a few hours to arrange a parade in Moscow or something more,” he said.

Zelensky added that Kyiv is pushing for a longer-term solution. “Ukraine’s proposal is a long-term ceasefire, reliable and guaranteed human security and lasting peace,” he wrote, adding that Ukraine is ready for negotiations in any dignified and effective format.

The proposal is linked to Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on 9 May. Several world leaders, including Prime Minister Robert Fico, are expected to attend events in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Donald Trump in a phone call on Wednesday that he was ready to declare a ceasefire during the celebrations, his aide Yuri Ushakov said. Trump supported the idea and, in his words, suggested “some kind of ceasefire” in the war in Ukraine.
