Germany Calls for End to EU Unanimity Rule

Germany has proposed a fundamental reform of EU decision-making that would limit the veto power of member states. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the EU should decide by qualified majority rather than unanimity on key issues, according to Euronews.

Berlin argues the current system frequently blocks the Union's decision-making, as illustrated by the prolonged dispute over $90bn in aid to Ukraine, which was held up for an extended period by Hungary under Viktor Orban's leadership.

Wadephul said 12 countries already support the change. He also proposed that groups of states should be able to move ahead without the consent of all EU members, particularly on foreign and security policy.

Germany is also pushing for stricter conditions on the allocation of EU funds, calling for funding to be linked to respect for the rule of law.
