Medvedev Threatens Germany Over Nuclear Weapons Debate

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has lashed out at Berlin, the Swiss weekly Die Weltwoche reported. In an article published by the Russian state broadcaster RT, Medvedev claimed that Germany’s 1990 reunification was legally questionable because it was never put to a referendum.

Medvedev also accused Germany of militarism and “revanchist ambitions”. He criticized the establishment of a NATO naval headquarters in Rostock, which he said violated the so-called Two Plus Four Treaty, the basic document that set out the terms of German reunification.

Berlin has rejected similar criticism in the past, saying the headquarters is a German-led national command.

The Russian politician sharpened his rhetoric further, suggesting that any German acquisition of nuclear weapons would be seen by Moscow as grounds for war. He also warned that a conflict with Russia would mean “total annihilation” for Germany. Medvedev accused German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of endangering the country’s economy through his defense policy.
