EU Seeks to Accelerate Moldova Accession Talks

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Friday that, while the EU has not yet set a date for the start of formal accession talks with Moldova, Brussels aims to move forward as quickly as possible. She made the remarks during a visit by Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

Kallas said political changes in several Member States have created more favorable conditions for EU enlargement. She added that the current window, with limited opposition among Member States, should be used to advance Moldova’s bid.

Moldova has made progress on reforms, she said, adding that the separatist region of Transnistria “will not become an obstacle” to the country’s accession.

Sandu reiterated that Chisinau is aiming to sign an accession treaty with the EU by 2028.
