Trump Announces Three-Day Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire
US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine from 9 to 11 May, posting the announcement on his Truth Social account. He said all combat operations should cease during this period and that the agreement includes the exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war on each side.
Both Russia and Ukraine have recently accused each other of violating previous ceasefires, each of which was declared independently by one side.
Trump expressed hope that the announcement marks a step toward ending the war. "Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War", he said, adding that negotiations to end the conflict are continuing and making progress.
Ukraine's chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, arrived in Miami for a series of meetings with US officials as peace talks have stalled over the status of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. Moscow is demanding that Kyiv withdraw troops from parts of the region it has failed to occupy, while Ukraine says it will not cede territory it currently controls.
