Brussels Negotiates AI Access with OpenAI and Anthropic

The European Commission is in negotiations with US companies OpenAI and Anthropic over access to their artificial intelligence (AI) models, Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier confirmed on Monday.

Regnier said Brussels welcomed OpenAI's proactive approach, with the company having indicated its intention to make its new AI model available to the Commission. Talks with OpenAI are ongoing.

Commission officials have held four or five meetings with Anthropic, Regnier added, but discussions have not yet reached the point where access to the company's models has been addressed.

"With one (OpenAI), you have a company proactively offering to give access to the company. With the other one (Anthropic), we have good exchanges though we're not at a stage where we can speculate on potential access or not", Regnier said at the Commission's regular daily briefing.
