Russian Duma Backs Military Protection for Citizens Abroad

Russia’s State Duma has passed a law allowing the armed forces to be used to protect Russian citizens detained or prosecuted abroad.

The government-backed measure was approved by deputies in both its second and third readings. It would allow the president to deploy the military to protect Russian citizens from criminal prosecution or other legal proceedings by foreign or international courts in which Russia does not participate.

The law also states that Russian authorities may, on the basis of a presidential decision, take measures to protect citizens who are arrested or prosecuted by courts in other countries.

If signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the law will enter into force 10 days after its official publication.
