Xi Praises New Positioning in China-US Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping has praised a “new positioning” in relations between China and the United States following a summit meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.

Xi said the two leaders had agreed that building a constructive, strategically stable relationship would guide ties over the next three years and beyond.

Beijing described the model as based primarily on cooperation, with “measured competition” designed to ensure “a normal stability in which differences are controllable, and a lasting stability in which peace can be expected”.

Xi called for expanded exchanges and cooperation in trade, health, agriculture, tourism, people-to-people contacts and law enforcement.

At the same time, he stressed that the United States should handle the issue of Taiwan with “utmost caution”. China claims the democratically governed island as its own territory, while Taipei rejects that position.

“If handled poorly, the two countries could collide or even enter into conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into an extremely dangerous situation”, Xi said.
