Google and Meta Criticized over Children's Digital Programs

Meta and Google have funded well-known children's brands including Sesame Street, the Girl Scouts and Highlights magazine to teach children to use technology in moderation. Critics argue, however, that the same companies are also developing apps that young users find difficult to disengage from.

According to documents and public statements, the companies have invested tens of millions of dollars in such programs, using popular characters, magazines and songs to reach hundreds of thousands of children and parents.

Parent organizations and experts say the initiatives allow technology companies to improve their reputations at a time when they face lawsuits over claims that their products are addictive and harmful to the mental health of minors. One lawsuit has already resulted in a $6m verdict.

Programs aimed at children under 12 have also drawn criticism. Researchers warn that the campaigns may indirectly prepare children for earlier use of social media.

Both Meta and Google deny that their programs are harmful, saying they promote digital safety, privacy and responsible use of technology.
