Trump and Merz Agree: No Nuclear Weapons for Iran

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump following his return from a visit to China. According to Merz, the two leaders agreed that Iran must immediately resume negotiations with the West, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and must not acquire nuclear weapons.

Merz reported on the call on the social network X, where he also stressed the common stance of Berlin and Washington on the war in Ukraine. He said the two leaders discussed options for a peaceful resolution of the conflict and coordinated their positions ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.

The chancellor also stressed the importance of the transatlantic partnership, saying that the United States and Germany remain strong allies within NATO despite differing views on some international issues.
