Samsung Faces Serious Crisis as Union Strike Looms
Samsung Electronics chief Jay Y. Lee has publicly apologized over an ongoing wage dispute with the company's unions that could trigger a strike at one of the world's most important technology companies. Salary negotiations between management and unions collapsed this week despite mediation by the South Korean government, and unions are pressing ahead with a planned strike set to begin next week.
The situation is causing concern among government officials in Seoul, who warn that a disruption in production could damage the country's economy, exports and financial markets. Samsung is the world's largest memory chip maker, supplying components to companies such as Nvidia, AMD and Google.
In a statement, Lee stressed the need for dialogue while reiterating his apology for past incidents of suppression of union activities at the company. The dispute is shaping up to be one of the most serious labor crises in the South Korean tech giant's history.
