Rural Trump Voters Back President Despite Rising Fuel Costs

Rising gasoline prices following the conflict with Iran have done little to erode support for Donald Trump among voters in northeastern Colorado. Many residents of rural areas say higher costs are acceptable if they prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

In the town of Wiggins and the surrounding counties of Morgan and Weld, where Republicans have long dominated, voters acknowledge that expensive fuel and food are straining their budgets. Yet they continue to back the president, believing he is doing the right thing.

Trump recently stated that when dealing with Iran, his focus is not on the financial situation of Americans but on preventing the country from acquiring nuclear weapons. Democrats have criticized the remarks, but several Colorado residents say they are willing to accept short-term sacrifice and give the situation time. Some add that the Democratic alternative is unacceptable to them.
