Leo XIV in France: In the Eye of the Storm

The pope is coming to a France where Catholicism may be making an unexpected comeback – and where his message could prove politically explosive.

In a month, Paris will welcome a guest who is as eagerly anticipated as he is politically controversial. From 25 to 28 September, Pope Leo XIV will make his first apostolic visit to France since his election, in a country where hosting a pontiff is never an entirely religious affair. Four days, three cities – Paris, Lourdes and Metz – and an itinerary promising popular fervor, powerful symbols and potential friction with the political authorities.

The contrast with his predecessor is striking. Pope Francis had an ambivalent relationship with France, to say the least. He had declined the invitation to attend the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris in December 2024, preferring to send a video message to French Catholics. A year earlier, during his trip to Marseille for the Mediterranean Encounters, he was careful to specify that he was not coming “to France” but “to Marseille”, in order to emphasize that this was a Mediterranean rather than a national visit.

Pope Leo XIV, on the other hand, is indeed coming to France. And he clearly intends to make his presence felt there.

An Itinerary Rich in Symbolism

The trip will begin on Friday 25 September, in Paris. The pope will first be received at the Élysée Palace by Emmanuel Macron, before meeting with government officials, civil society representatives and the diplomatic corps. He will then go to UNESCO, where he will deliver a speech, before proceeding to Notre-Dame for vespers with bishops, priests, deacons, members of religious orders and seminarians. The day will conclude at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis with a prayer vigil for young people aged 17 to 35.
