The incident occurred during a massive Russian missile attack on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

Ukraine immediately blamed Russia for the attack, but this was refuted by Poland and later by international investigations. According to available information, it was a Ukrainian air defense missile that attempted to intercept a Russian missile attack but failed and struck Polish territory.

This incident was the first case during the Russian invasion in which a NATO member was hit.

In an interview with Bogdan Rymanowski, former Polish President Andrzej Duda admitted that shortly after the incident, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called him and pressured Poland to immediately announce that it was a Russian missile.
