Five Minutes to Kill

A freshman in Congress understands that questioning during hearings can be a powerful weapon.

Despite being in his first term, Texas Representative Brandon Gill is quickly becoming a major force in the Republican Party. He has captivated large swaths of the public with his targeted questioning in hearings, aided by his social-media savviness. Gill understands something that many of his colleagues do not: a five-minute question period during congressional hearings is not a mundane formality, but rather a lethal weapon to destroy institutions and kill careers.

Gill currently serves on several committees, so he regularly has the opportunity to question witnesses – and with his sharp mind and uncompromising personality, he exposes the idiocy, hypocrisy and ideological insanity of the elites running some of our most prestigious institutions.

If you watch enough videos, a clear strategy emerges: Gill arrives equipped with thorough research about the witnesses, asks simple questions and illuminates how their evasive answers contradict their previous statements.

More often than not, the witnesses leave flustered and humiliated, while we are pleasantly entertained (and somewhat disturbed by their incompetence). Perhaps one of the most memorable examples is when Gill questioned National Public Radio CEO Katherine Maher and resurfaced some of her excessively woke posts on social media.

From Oversight to Audience

It is refreshing to watch an elected official use the allotted time for its actual purpose, namely questioning the witness, as opposed to pontificating on an irrelevant topic. And while Gill’s strategy is effective for unmasking the ideological capture of institutions and their senior staff, it could easily produce underwhelming results, since very few people tune in to watch congressional hearings.

Thankfully, Gill and his staff understand that those few minutes offer more than enough material for a viral social-media post. Just quickly scroll through his official Instagram account, and you will see plenty of amusing videos from hearings. His content sometimes receives hundreds of thousands, or even over a million, likes.

While plenty of societal ills emerge from social media, Gill shows us how large platforms can be a beneficial tool: he is reaching thousands of people who otherwise might never see anti-woke content. And, as a result of his viral moments, Gill is quickly becoming well-known.

The Politics Behind the Performance

Aside from being a valuable asset in hearings, Gill has proven to be an unapologetic defender of America, and he does not refrain from sharing right-wing beliefs that some establishment politicians distance themselves from. “Everything that directly impacts your life – affordability, safety, cultural stability – all of it is downstream from immigration. The choice to vote for a Democrat Party committed to opening our borders to the world is a choice to commit civilizational suicide”, Gill wrote on social media recently.

While plenty of Republican politicians and conservative commentators tiptoe around issues related to race, Gill regularly calls out instances of anti-whiteness. In fact, he has bravely emphasized that the core belief of his opposing party is racism: “Nothing unifies the Democrat Party more than vitriolic racial animus against white people. It’s evil and indefensible”, Gill said.

At a time when there is a worrisome lack of confidence in the nation, Gill is a source of optimism for the Republican Party because he is proof that competent, ambitious people are willing to aggressively defend right-wing policies and fight for America. Hopefully, his political ascent is a sign that the old guard is losing its grip, and the party is abandoning toothless conservatism.

So long as he continues his current approach in hearings and keeps employing a good social-media manager, Gill is destined to be a household name soon.
