If the free market ceases to offer a realistic chance of owning a home, starting a family and building wealth, the resulting vacuum will be filled by politicians promising more government, regulation and redistribution.
The question, therefore, is not why young people are drawn to socialism, but why the market is failing to give them a reason to trust it.
The Economic Reality of Generation Z
For Generation Z, homeownership has become an almost unattainable luxury. Real estate prices in many countries have risen faster than wages. Rent consumes an ever-larger share of income and is often the biggest monthly expense for young people.
Student loans, unstable employment, temp jobs and rising living costs can leave young people feeling that even hard work and a good education are no longer enough to achieve what previous generations took for granted.
Surveys repeatedly confirm that economic uncertainty is young people’s greatest concern. Their worries are not about ideological purity or abstract political issues, but the practical question of whether they will be able to afford a place to live, start a family and own anything at all.
In many places, buying a first home now takes far longer or has become nearly unattainable. Owning a home is shifting from a common goal to a privilege, weakening the incentive to work and save toward it. As the sense grows that the system is working against young people, so does their willingness to seek alternatives that promise faster and seemingly fairer solutions.
When the Market Stops Working
Historically, the free market has offered a simple promise: if you work, save and take risks, you have a chance to improve your situation. For Generation Z, that promise has lost much of its meaning in many countries. Regulations, bureaucracy, a shortage of new housing, speculative investment and rising living costs are making the path to owning a home longer or closing it off entirely.
In such an environment, the old promise that hard work brings success rings increasingly hollow. Young people see that even with a good education and a stable job, they often remain renters, postpone parenthood and feel that the system is stacked against them. This is not merely an illusion. It is a reaction to concrete economic obstacles.
Where the market ceases to offer realistic opportunities, a political vacuum emerges. Politicians and movements promising greater government intervention, price caps, redistribution and protection from market forces step into that space. Socialism and democratic socialism can therefore seem like logical responses to their frustration.
It is not primarily about a love of Marx, but a sense that the system no longer offers them a fair chance. When homeownership becomes out of reach, the appeal of those advocating a more equitable redistribution of wealth grows. When stability seems like an illusion, the willingness to experiment with a greater role for the state grows.
What Should the Right Do?
Instead of merely defending the abstract concept of the free market, the right should seek concrete ways to restore opportunities for homeownership, personal responsibility and economic freedom.
This means reducing barriers to housing construction, streamlining permitting processes, supporting first-time homebuyers, reforming the tax and regulatory environment and creating conditions in which work and saving once again pay off.
If the right can restore confidence that honest work leads to real progress, the appeal of socialist alternatives will diminish. If it fails to do so, it will continue to lose the younger generation – not because young people are ideologically misguided, but because the system is no longer giving them a reason to trust it.
Generation Z’s growing support for socialism reflects an economic reality in which homeownership, stability and wealth-building are becoming out of reach for many. If the market ceases to offer young people real opportunities, political alternatives will fill the void.
The right, therefore, should not merely fight socialism. It must restore the conditions under which it makes sense to support the market, private property and personal responsibility. If those conditions disappear, so too will the reasons for the younger generation to defend them.
