Prosecutors Say Robinson Killed Charlie Kirk over His Political Views

Utah prosecutors say Charlie Kirk’s political views motivated his alleged killer, citing a letter from one of Kirk’s friends, messages attributed to the defendant and inscriptions on ammunition recovered with the suspected murder weapon.

Tyler Robinson targeted conservative activist Charlie Kirk because of his political beliefs, prosecutors say.

In court filings submitted on Tuesday, they cited Kirk’s opposition to same-sex marriage and transgender rights as part of the motive.

The filings offer the prosecution’s most detailed account yet of what drove the fatal shooting of Kirk, an ally of US President Donald Trump, at Utah Valley University on 10 September 2025.

A Letter from Kirk’s Friend

Utah County prosecutors cited a letter entered into evidence from David Engelhardt, a friend of Kirk and a board member of Turning Point USA.
