A Cancer Vaccine Is Closer Than Ever

An experimental vaccine tailored to individual patients’ tumors has succeeded in a major melanoma trial. The results could mark an important step toward using mRNA technology to treat cancer.

Cancer is not one disease, but an umbrella term that covers hundreds of diseases, all involving the uncontrolled growth and division of cells. That enormous variation is one reason the prospect of a single, universal "cancer vaccine" remains more of a slogan than a medical reality.

But Moderna and Merck are pursuing a very different idea: instead of developing one vaccine for everyone, they are creating a treatment tailored to the genetic makeup of each patient’s tumor.

Their experimental therapy, intismeran autogene, also known as V940 or mRNA-4157, has now passed a crucial test. On 19 August, the companies announced that it had met the main goals of a Phase 3 trial in melanoma patients. Phase 3 is the last major stage of clinical testing before a treatment can be submitted to regulators for approval.

The announcement sent Moderna shares soaring, adding approximately $44bn to the company’s market value in a single day, according to the Financial Times.
