US Democrats Have a Hasan Piker Problem – and Cannot Solve It

Michigan is a state with a large Jewish and Muslim population, both key constituencies for Democrats. Now the party is being forced to choose between them – and not enjoying the process.

Late last month, the Democratic nominee for the US Senate in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, was in talks to win an important endorsement from one of his more moderate colleagues, a state senator called Jeremy Moss. The talks, by all accounts, were going well – until the well-known left-wing influencer Hasan Piker entered the chat.

Taking to his platform, viewed by millions daily, Piker said the following about American Jews:

“If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone’s going to come around and take action. Not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews.”

This was, of course, delivered not as an explicit threat, but with the more-in-sorrow-than-in-anger tone beloved of a certain kind of left-winger who presents his threats to Jewish people to stay silent as a form of helpful advice. For El-Sayed, however, who has basked in Piker’s support, this latest outburst was costly: Moss declined to endorse him, along with a slew of other Democrats, citing the candidate’s refusal to openly disavow Piker.
